I remember Jay Wesley telling me this spring that he thinks the yoy herring are feeding on the mussel larvae in end connecting the bait fish to the bottom of the food chain again.

This is a niche sub species of herring that is adapting for lake michigan. Cool stuff, i think i wrote something on here earlier in the year about it too.

Good read, does this indicate a change in the lake's ecosystem? An apparent bait fish bloom this year along with the possible return of these fish could it signal a leveling off or a decline in the amount of damage those quaggas are doing. In other words are they starting a down cycle?

Don,
it is good news but to early to bank on. I think we all know that something is going on with the lake. Also many other associated areas that need attention. To find some good news even if it is a slight ray of sunshine is just that, good news. I'm afraid to suggest that there is a full out rebound going on. However those lake herring have been thought to be gone for many, many years. This old gal(Lake Michigan)doesn't want to give up, she just needs alittle help. If egg collection doesn't get better in Michigan, then Indiana will probably have to go with out. Possibly Illinois to. To think that after some of the information that is out there becomes more up to date, it is possible that the state DNR services may want to hold back on adding extra coho and steel for a few years to see what if any impact there is. Is there a possibility that eggs from the herring can get raised in a hatchery for expansion? Possibly. But your comment on the quagga mussells hasn't been answered as yet. So before investing money to go this route, they will need more studies on what is exactly going on with the food chain. If all the kings are out of the picture and alewives continue to crash, then at least we know the kings were not the original problem and something else is going on.
