2pm hit today and my work was done, honey do list was done........so lets fish. Wind forcast looked productive and chance of storms in the area looked minimal. I call my brother in law - hes never been out on the big lake and he is game.

We launch at 3pm, and burr its chilly at portage marina.....not a good sign. Got out of the ditch and theres 2 footers with a stiff north breeze. North we head towards the tri state lines. The plan was to get out to 100' and troll in. Halfway out, there are now 3-4's. We give up and stop at 80'. Now a storm is headed right for us so we make a B-line towards chicago to get around it. We finally got lines in at 6pm and started at 80' on a southward troll.

Marked very little and went 1 for 1 nabbing a laker in 68 FOW on a bloddy nose on a swr down 50. Pulled lines at 8pm and headed home. Better days are hopefully ahead..........

Hope your brother in law didn't freak out too bad with the lake conditions.

I think he was on edge a bit but once we got trolling with the waves it wasnt bad. At one point he said "have you ever been out when its this bad?". Certainly not preferred conditions but manageable. Dont think I could have trolled into the waves at all in my size boat.

Man Jeff you had him set up and baited. All he needed was to swallow the hook.

"Have you ever been out when its this bad"?

To bad the fish didn't help you out some.

what is an SWR? At least you didn't get skunked - that is the only thing I really don't like; I get one I am happy (heck i'm out on the boat I am happy but). Thanks for the report. I am toying with going out tomorrow but may go to a smaller lake and just go for some pans or bass. It seems like things are slow for the Salmon and haven't heard much about kings or coho hitting so not sure. Have to learn how to go for the deeper fish now I guess until the steelies come in.

An SWR is a "Secret Weapon Rod/Rig. Its 2-3 colors of leadcore off the downrigger - your spoon etc will basically end up below the rigger ball.

I was excited about getting out tomorrow and then the damn forcast changed - 80% chance of rain and storms. This weather is getting old.........ugh

TY for the info . accuweather still shows most of the morning clear and a few thunderstorms afternoon. Still not sure if I am going to go big lake or a smaller one - depends on the weather in the AM.
