My pyrotechnic distress signal flares expire in September. Mulling what to do about it, I saw that Orion now has a LED signal device that is Coast Guard compliant and sells for about 20 bucks less than the similar Weems and Plath model. I was wondering if anyone has tried this particular one yet? Looks very similar but a major difference is how they are activated. The Orion model has a simple waterproof on/off switch and the W and P model has the user twist the reflector dome right or left for on/off function. Both have a similar light output and battery life. 2 D cells for the Orion and 3 C's for the W and P I think. The plus for the W and P is that it will fit into a rod holder. Any help would be great.

I have the W/P (just got it this year) and it came with the distress flag as well. Not sure if the Orion has the distress flag also or if it is just the light. Also the CG suggested I keep my expired flares on the boat since they are easier to see from a helicopter than the light or a distress flag. Can't say anything bout the Orion as I have not seen or used it.

Thanks Ed. I should have noted that the Orion model comes with a plastic sheet flag with grommets in it. I just wished it would have fit a rod holder as the W and P model does. Would have made the choice easy for me. Also I like the idea of the switch over the twist off and on feature. Seems simpler but someone could over tighten and ruin the contacts.
