We made it out for a shakedown trip this morning. Fortunately it was a success. We cleared the pierhead about an hour after sunrise and dropped lines in front of the mouth in 40 FOW. We marked fish but had no takers so we trolled east toward the breakwall in Burns Harbor. There were a few other boats scattered between 30 and 50 FOW, but we didn’t see any nets go up. A couple hours passed without any action and we started to feel discouraged. We mulled over the idea of picking up lines and shooting over to Gary Light but ultimately decided to head over to Indiana Dunes State Park. We moved into about 20 FOW and started picking off the coho one after another. It’s wasn’t hot and heavy but the action was steady. The first coho came on a downrigger rod with a DW SS Goldilocks spoon 10 ft. down and 10 ft. back. The next 8 coho came on planer rods with red Thinfish. We trolled into about 12 FOW and hooked a large lake trout with a J9 Rapala with a perch pattern of the downrigger. We had another fish on that pulled line hard and broke the line. So not sure what that was. In the end we went 9 for 10. One lake trout and the rest coho. Great day on the water.

Yeah, I’ve heard it’s been a little tough. Can’t figure out why though. Are there more coho offshore this year? Who knows. Hopefully it gets better soon.

Can’t wait for the kings to start coming in.
