TOPIC:

Went to the ship canal to troll on this past Tuesday. It was very slow and due to the cloudy skies, the water looked even chalkier than it was. After fishing for an hour or so, my buddy and I were contemplating going to try for lakers and forget trolling. The clouds began to clear and we decided to give it a few more passes before we would pull lines and run out to the breakwall. Then we started getting bit. I landed a decent fish, about an 18 inch coho. Had another tap or two on the rods. After the sun had been out for an hour or so, we started picking away at them, including a couple browns around 19-21” and more coho from about 15-18”. Then a planer rod went off and just went down. Not the usual bouncing. I grabbed the rod and after a brief battle, landed a 29”, just under 7 lb spring coho. So we ended with 8 fish kept between two guys, could have had our two man limit but the winds were switching and rain was in the forecast and we had had our fun for the day. Our setup was two Yellow Birds with Brad’s Thinfish in a couple of colors (the best has been the yellow with three pink dots on the side of it), as well as two flatlines with different colors of the same rattling baits. What started out slow turned out to be a memorable day on the water. That’s what I love about our sport.
