First spring with my own boat I'll be fishing mainly out of New Buffalo. Just wondered when is the earliest I can put in and not worry about ice on the main lake. Channel is open in New Buffalo been lots of guys shore fishing. Just want to say this site is great this will be my third year fishing the big lake and I've learned a ton from this site thanks.

Sunday at Michigan City there were still some fairly large ice chunks in the water around the harbor.  You could still troll safely around the harbor in calm water if you pay attention but I wouldn't pick up and run.  Ice should be gone soon.
