TOPIC:

Started straight out of Burns and trolled east. Slow pick on coho on the surface - mostly ThinFins on the surface. No action on downriggers. Didn't use any long lines. Caught one laker on a Red Squiggle RT on the surface - no weight at all. Caught a steelie on a Hunter Boys - Coho craw.

Time for a mid-morning strategic move. Seemed like more guys east than west so I went west. Had the whole US Steel Wall to myself. What? No boats, no fish? Had about half the lines set when a #3 Silver Bullet (J-Plug) 20 down gets bit. It came to the top way-n-ell back behind the boat and it still looked BIG. My brother John worked the stick and was starting to whine like a baby (he is my youngest brother) by the time the fish got close to the boat. Long-short - 28 pounds on the scale! I've had a few 30s on other boats, but I think this is the largest for the current model Brother Nature - and it was commissioned in 1999. Nephew Noah got a release on a Hey Babe spoon 30 feet deep, but it turned out to be a decent laker. Needed two more to fill when the Silver Bullet took another bite and Noah was on to something. Great fight. This one spent most of the time trying to hide under the boat but eventually, 17 pounds of silver king was flopping on the deck. While ooing and elbow bumping one last bite on a planer line and we were done.
Had everything but a brown - but I never made it to the discharge area at Gary. Lots of bait everywhere I fished, with no big northeast blows lately the water is very clear.
