So most know St Joe was on fire two weeks ago. The water has drastically changed in temp, and the hoarde has moved north with colder water. There's still kings around, but early in the morning in the dirty water from the river is best.
I fished sat, sun, and today. Posted about sat already, but Sunday was a bust. Wasted time going 10 miles north towards South Haven then out to 130. Water at the surface was 74° and fishing was slow. Only had one rip on a 300 copper/blue dolphin magnum, but it was gone when I took the board off. Lost one small coho an hour later cuz I tried to flip it in the boat instead of grabbing the net...buh bye. Quit at noon in the sizzling heat.
Decided to try at 630 for the evening bite because I felt defeated. Stayed in close NW of the pier and found bait and fish in 70 FOW . Not a bump until the sun dropped. As I was pulling my lines, the same 300 copper with the blue dolphin takes off like freight train. I got the board off and half the copper back and....nope...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz gone all the way down to hardly any backing. I faught the SOB for 20 more minutes of runs. I get him to ten feet behind the motor, he jumps up, flips me the middle fin, laughs, and says buh byeeee!!! I got a 20 last Saturday, and this one made that look small......total heartbreak after a crummy hot day of no fish. I saved the hook and took a pic of it lol.
Got up early today to try to make up for Sunday. In the same spot in 70 FOW before the sun was up. Put the 300 copper out first and fish on while I was putting the board on. Nice start. Got another king on a 10 color/ green dolphin 20 minutes later. Quit to drive home at 10, but ended up 4 for 6 with three kings and a Laker. Dipsies and riggers never got touched. Had a little bird visitor for and hour or so today. Not only did he bring me good luck, but he ate tons of flies and gnats too. Best boat partner in a while lol.
If anyone gets out there soon, stay in the river water plume EARLY in the morning in 60' to 80'. There's tons of bait in there, but the majority of fish are heading for deep water by mid morning.

Those are some nice fish still. Those birds are awesome! I seen the plume also this morning, lots of boats working it. Also lots of debris.
