Never been to either. Going to make the trip with a buddy that has never fished salmon!

Seems like st joe is the better one at this time? Any suggestions?

Fishing has greatly slowed down out of st joe and Michigan city. I would watch for reports on here and Facebook before making any hard decisions. For what I understand the mother load is a couple ports north of st joe now.
It's better to ask forgiveness than for permission.

Looking at some reports last night, good catches were coming out of grand haven yesterday in 170 to 200ft of water. Kings up to 20#s down 70 to 90ft and coho in the top 30.

We still did ok out of St Joe on Friday but not sure how much that will change by next weekend. Also not sure what this cold spell will do to them either. We were in the 100 to 130 FOW catching some nice fish (I posted here about it). A friend also heard they were catching out of Benton Harbor Saturday using Spin Dr and flies. I would say get out as early as possible since the bite seemed to turn off on us at around 11 EDT I believe (wasnt watching the clock that close).

Most yrs you can find kings in st joe till early/ mid June. Then from mid June to early July its more about steelies as the skamania come in. Even though last yr 5 to 10 lb Coho were available all summer in 100 to 150 fow with other species mixed in. Not many kings at that point. Then usually mid July like clock work the kings come back and fishing for them again is best early to mid August. A decent amount of kings are stocked in st joe with some natural reproduction but not a ton.
