I've actually had two FOY gaspergoos caught on my boat. One of them was a friend of mine, a lawyer who fishes regularly and has caught plenty of big fish. We hooked the big 'goo while fishing for kings one September and he swore he had a big chinook almost until the fish was in the net. We measured it, photographed it and I surreptitiously submitted it to the FOY contest. He won, got his certificate suitable for framing and had a big photo of the fish made. It's on the wall of his office, next to his big deer mounts, turkey tails and a long-tailed South Dakota pheasant.

Another time, I had a father and son on board and the youth had some mental disfunction. One of the young man's joys, however, was fishing so his dad brought him out with me to fish for a "big" fish. Again, a big gaspergoo bit and nearly wore the boy out - actually we caught several that day. I mentioned the FOY contest to the dad and he was all in. The dad sent in the paperwork and when his boy won, the dad told me the award was "better than Christmas."
